Evolution, History, and Legacy: Our Story

Washington, DC is a region with deep roots and strong, close-knit communities. Family & Nursing Care is proud to have been a part of this community since 1968. We are proud of the work we have done, side-by-side, with so many of you. And we are honored to call this part of the world “home.”

Below is just a snapshot of some of the milestones achieved by Family & Nursing Care.

1968

Sandy Kursban starts Family & Nursing Care.

1970s

Sandy helps shape the home care industry:

  • Charter member of the Montgomery County Provider Council, which became the Grass Roots Organization for the Well-being of Seniors (GROWS)
  • Appointed by County Executive to serve on the Montgomery County Coordinating Council on Home Care

1980s

Family & Nursing Care presents The Isolated Elderly Symposium to address the growing concerns surrounding isolation and depression among aging adults.

1990s

Family & Nursing Care becomes a true ‘family business’ with daughter Julie and son Neal joining the company—not just a one-room, woman-owned small business anymore.

Family & Nursing Care hosts The Senior Celebration with thousands of attendees to celebrate Family & Nursing Care’s 25 years in business and honor high-impact seniors in the community.

2000s

As part of the company’s 40th anniversary celebration, the Family & Nursing Care Foundation is formed to help lower-income older adults gain access to the care they need to remain in their homes and to provide scholarships for students to earn a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate in order to care for the aging population.

Today

Family & Nursing Care is an award-winning home care services company, the largest single location home care services company in the nation, and is known as a pioneer and thought leader. The organization contributes to multiple community initiatives and Family & Nursing Care’s leaders are sought-after speakers at both the local and national levels. The company sets the bar for all home care services and is ever-evolving to meet the changing needs of older adults.
