Low-income Seniors Receive Nearly $200,000 in Home Support Grants from the Family & Nursing Care Foundation

Fixed Income Seniors are Able to Age in the Comfort of Their Homes

This past June, the Family & Nursing Care Foundation, a fund of the Community Foundation for Montgomery County, again awarded $30,000 in cash grants to two local non-profit organizations that provide low-income, aging adults with the dedicated home care support they need to remain in the safety and comfort of their own homes. This donation brings the Foundation’s total dollars donated toward this effort to $180,000 during the past six years.

The Foundation awarded $20,000 to Home Care Partners, a non-profit home care agency that provides a wide range of supportive services for elderly, chronically ill, and disabled residents in Washington, D.C. and Montgomery County, MD. A $10,000 grant was awarded to the Elderly Ministries program of Community Ministries of Rockville, an interfaith, non-profit organization providing a range of services to frail, elderly seniors.

“Home Care Partners is extremely grateful to receive continued grant support from the Family & Nursing Care Foundation.  These funds make it possible for some of our most vulnerable, older Montgomery County residents to remain in their homes with the assistance of a trained and compassionate aide.  Thank you to the Family & Nursing Care Foundation for this very generous support!” – Marla Lahat, MSW, LICSW, Executive Director, Home Care Partners

Established by Sandy Kursban, founder of Family & Nursing Care, Inc. the area’s leading provider of home care and therapeutic massage services, the Family & Nursing Care Foundation was created in 2008 and has been giving grants for six consecutive years. The grants are providing thousands of hours of comprehensive, home care services, enabling hundreds of low-income seniors to remain safely in their homes. The recipient organizations, Home Care Partners and Community Ministries of Rockville, are dedicated to assisting some of the most vulnerable members of our community: low-income senior citizens.

Recently, Ms. Kursban stated, “It feels like the culmination of my life’s work to issue these grants year after year and know they help hundreds of low-income seniors remain in their homes. These organizations are doing an amazing job and it’s a privilege to financially support their missions.”

“The support from Family & Nursing Care is invaluable to us as we serve our fragile and low income senior clients.   Thanks for caring for the most vulnerable seniors in our community.” – Agnes Saenz, Executive Director, Community Ministries of Rockville

The Foundation also seeks to help individuals who want to learn the skills needed to work in home care by addressing the financial barriers to entering training programs. In May, the Foundation awarded $25,000 to Montgomery College for Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students to receive financial assistance; this scholarship will award $5,000 a year to CNA candidates each year for five years. The college’s CNA program costs about $2,000 per student and includes tuition, text books, clinical training and associated fees.

Each year, Family & Nursing Care, Inc. donates a percentage of its profits to the Foundation. Ms. Kursban personally matches this amount dollar-for-dollar, as well as matches every outside donation the Foundation receives. In addition to the Foundation, the company also makes direct donations to many other non-profit organizations in the community.

According to AARP, nearly 90 percent of people over the age of 65 want to stay in their homes for as long as possible, and four of five in that age bracket believe their current home is where they will always live. Unfortunately, many seniors living on a fixed income are unable to realize this goal or afford essential in-home care services. The Family & Nursing Care Foundation is addressing this problem by providing financial assistance to organizations offering home care services for local residents who cannot afford them on their own.
