A pioneer in her field, Sandy Kursban’s essence is that of helping and serving others. Her deep respect for, and sensitivity toward, older adults inspired her to start Family & Nursing Care in 1968. Sandy believes strongly in providing the option of in-home support care, giving older adults the choice to remain as independent as possible in their own homes for as long as possible.
Over the years, Sandy helped to shape the home care industry and has revolutionized the way home care is provided in Maryland and the DC area. She has given freely of her time to serve the aging population through partnering with other companies, participating on various boards and committees, and serving as a resource for others.
One of Sandy’s core values is to give back to the community. Through Family & Nursing Care and personally, she gives to many nonprofit organizations and sponsors community activities and projects that directly benefit the senior community.
In 2008, in honor of Family & Nursing Care’s 40th anniversary, Sandy fulfilled her long-term dream for the company. She created the Family & Nursing Care Foundation (operating as a fund of the Community Foundation in Montgomery County), which gives grants to several nonprofit home care companies. The grants are used to provide free home care to low-income older adults. The Foundation also gives grants to Montgomery College to provide scholarships for students to earn a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate in order to care for the aging population.
When she is not overseeing the Foundation, Sandy enjoys spending time with her husband, children, and many grandchildren; taking nature walks and bird-watching; visiting art museums; traveling; and simply relaxing.
